Hip Injuries

At SurfEdge Sports Physiotherapy, we treat a wide range of hip injuries in athletes, weekend warriors, and active individuals. Whether you're dealing with a flare-up of an old issue or a new injury that's impacting your movement or performance, we’re here to help.

Common Hip Injuries We Treat

Hip pain can arise from trauma, overload, poor biomechanics, or long-term wear and tear. Common conditions we see include:

  • Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)
Caused by extra bone growth around the ball or socket of the hip joint, leading to pinching, pain, and stiffness.

  • Labral Tears
The labrum is a ring of cartilage that helps stabilise the hip. Tears can cause catching, clicking, or pain deep in the joint.

  • Hip Flexor Tendinopathy
Often seen in runners and athletes, this condition involves overload of the iliopsoas tendon, causing pain at the front of the hip.

  • Gluteal Tendinopathy / Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS)
A common cause of lateral hip pain, especially in women over 40, runners, and people with poor hip control or pelvic stability.

  • Hip Bursitis
Inflammation of the bursa (fluid-filled sac) near the hip joint can cause sharp pain, especially when lying on the affected side.

  • Adductor Strains
Often seen in field and surf athletes, adductor injuries cause groin pain and reduced hip strength and power.

  • Osteoarthritis (OA)
Hip OA can lead to stiffness, reduced range, and functional decline. Early management can delay progression and improve quality of life.

  • Post-surgical Rehabilitation
We also support patients after hip arthroscopy, labral repair, total hip replacement, and other procedures.

Signs You Should Seek Help

You don’t have to put up with ongoing hip pain or dysfunction. Physiotherapy may help if you’re experiencing:

  • Pain during or after activity (especially running, paddling, squatting, or stairs)

  • Difficulty standing from sitting or getting in/out of the car

  • Clicking, locking, or giving way of the hip

  • Lateral hip or groin pain, particularly at night

  • Reduced range of motion or stiffness

  • Limping or changes to your gait

Our Approach

At SurfEdge, we take the time to understand your injury and goals, whether that’s returning to competition, managing a chronic condition, or being able to sit comfortably again.

Our assessment includes:

  • A detailed history and biomechanical screening

  • Strength, control and range of motion testing

  • Functional movement analysis tailored to your sport or lifestyle

  • Referral for imaging or medical review if needed

Treatment may include:

  • Individualised exercise programming

  • Manual therapy (joint mobilisation, soft tissue work)

  • Dry needling or taping

  • Load management planning

  • Return-to-sport or return-to-work guidance

  • Education on movement patterns, footwear, and training loads

We work closely with GPs, sports physicians, and orthopaedic surgeons when needed to ensure you get the right care at the right time.
