Physiotherapy supporting women at every stage

At SurfEdge Physiotherapy, we believe women deserve high-quality, tailored care throughout every stage of life: from adolescence to post-menopause, through pregnancy, postnatal recovery and beyond. Women's health physiotherapy is a specific area of physiotherapy that addresses the unique challenges faced by women, with a strong focus on pelvic health, musculoskeletal support and whole-body function.

Whether you are managing incontinence, preparing for childbirth, returning to sport after having a baby, or dealing with hormonal or age-related changes, our approach is professional, evidence-based and collaborative.

What is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?

Women’s Health Physiotherapy, also known as Pelvic Health Physiotherapy, focuses on conditions specific to the female body, especially those involving the pelvis, pelvic floor and abdominal wall. It also addresses musculoskeletal issues that may arise during key life stages such as menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery and menopause.

Physiotherapists in this field have training to assess, diagnose and treat conditions including:

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction (such as incontinence or prolapse)

  • Pregnancy-related pain (such as pelvic girdle or lower back pain)

  • Postnatal recovery (including abdominal separation and return to exercise)

  • Pain with sex (dyspareunia)

  • Endometriosis-related musculoskeletal pain

  • Bowel and bladder dysfunction

  • Exercise prescription for bone health, especially during and after menopause

Why is Women’s Health Physiotherapy Important?

Many women are told that common symptoms like leaking urine, pelvic heaviness or painful sex are “just part of being a woman.” But just because something is common, doesn’t mean it’s normal. With the right support and a personalised physiotherapy plan, many of these issues can be significantly improved or resolved completely.

A physiotherapist can provide:

  • Accurate assessment and diagnosis

  • Pelvic floor muscle training

  • Hands-on therapy and manual techniques

  • Safe return-to-exercise programs

  • Education and support to help you feel confident in your body again

How We Can Help at SurfEdge Physiotherapy

At SurfEdge Physiotherapy, we understand that discussing pelvic health or pain can be uncomfortable. You will be listened to, respected and supported. All consultations are held in a private, welcoming environment, with your comfort and privacy prioritised.

We commonly help women with the following:

🏃‍♀️ Postnatal Recovery

Whether you have just had your first baby or your fourth, recovery looks different for everyone. We assess abdominal separation, pelvic floor function, bladder and bowel control, and help you return safely to fitness, work and family life.

🤰 Pregnancy-related Pain

Physiotherapy can ease discomfort from pelvic girdle pain, sciatica and postural changes. We also provide pelvic floor and perineal preparation strategies to help you prepare for birth.

🚴‍♀️ Return to Sport

If you are keen to return to running, paddling, lifting or swimming, we’ll guide you through a safe, structured plan. A strong pelvic floor and stable core are key to long-term performance and comfort.

🚻 Bladder and Bowel Concerns

If you are leaking with running, sneezing or lifting, or struggling with urgency or constipation, we can help you retrain your pelvic floor and restore control.

🌿 Menopause Support

Menopause can affect muscle tone, joint mobility and pelvic floor function. We offer strength and mobility programs, pelvic health care and advice to help you stay strong and active through midlife and beyond.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first session will include a detailed discussion about your symptoms, history, goals and concerns.

Your personalised treatment plan may include:

  • Pelvic floor muscle training (with or without biofeedback)

  • Exercises for your core, hips, glutes and posture

  • Breathing and relaxation techniques

  • Manual therapy or myofascial release

  • Advice about bladder and bowel habits, exercise and lifestyle

  • Collaboration with your GP, obstetrician, gynaecologist or midwife where helpful

Is It Ever Too Late?

Absolutely not. Whether your symptoms started recently or have been present for years, it is never too late to seek help. Many women notice significant improvement in their quality of life, even into their 60s, 70s and beyond.
